In the upscale neighborhood of Green Hills, Nashville, the Smith family faced a significant challenge with their sloped backyard, which limited their outdoor usability and aesthetic appeal. Seeking to transform their space into a functional and visually appealing outdoor area, they approached Smarter Scapes LLC to design and construct a 120 linear foot retaining wall complemented by a tiered landscaping solution. The family desired a seamless integration with their existing landscape while ensuring durability and compliance with local regulations.

The Challenge

The primary challenge was the steep slope of the Smiths’ backyard, which had poor drainage and was prone to erosion during heavy rainfall. The soil composition exacerbated these issues, as it was largely clay-based, which increased water runoff and pressure against any potential retaining structure. Additionally, access to the site was restricted by narrow side yards, complicating the transport of materials and equipment. The need to comply with EPA stormwater regulations and TDEC guidelines further emphasized the necessity for a well-engineered solution within a tight timeline, as the family wanted the project completed before the summer season.

Our Solution

Our team at Smarter Scapes LLC proposed a multi-faceted approach using Belgard retaining wall blocks known for their strength and aesthetic versatility. The design included a tiered system that not only provided structural support but also created distinct levels for planting and recreational use. To address drainage, we incorporated a permeable paver system at the base level, allowing rainwater to infiltrate the ground naturally, thus reducing surface runoff and pressure on the retaining wall.

We also installed a series of French drains behind the wall to capture and redirect water away from the structure, ensuring long-term stability. The choice of materials and design not only met the aesthetic desires of the Smith family but also adhered to ADA compliance, enabling easy access across all tiers.

The Process

The project spanned five weeks, with a dedicated crew of six skilled workers. The initial phase focused on site preparation, including soil excavation and grading. This was followed by the construction of the retaining wall, layer by layer, ensuring each block was meticulously aligned and secured with geogrid for enhanced stability.

The third phase involved the installation of the permeable pavers and drainage systems, which required precise engineering to ensure optimal water flow. The final phase was dedicated to landscaping, with native plants selected to thrive in the tiered environment and enhance the natural beauty of the new space.

Upon completion, the transformation was remarkable. The once unusable slope was now a stunning, multi-level outdoor area, perfect for family gatherings and relaxation.
