You Don’t Have to Live With It — or Demolish It
Every Nashville driveway and patio eventually gets there: hairline cracks, oil stains, that spalled patch by the garage, a surface that makes the whole house look older than it is. Tearing it out and re-pouring means dumpsters, a torn-up yard, and a week of not parking at home. So overlays became the smart alternative — put a new surface on top of structurally sound concrete.
Two very different products compete for that job. One is a poured coating. The other is real masonry. They look similar in a 30-second video. They don’t age, repair, or price the same way.
What Each One Actually Is
Paver Overlay (what we install)
Thin-profile (60 mm) concrete pavers laid over your existing slab on a thin bedding layer, edge-restrained and joint-locked. The pavers are through-body colored stone from major manufacturers with lifetime structural warranties.
- Individual units — any paver can be lifted and reset
- Patterns, borders, inlays, color blends
- Installed mechanically with a track-mounted paver lift and clamp: faster, tighter joints, uniform finish
- Adds roughly 2½″ of height — we handle transitions at garage doors and steps
Resin-Bound Overlay (Vuba Stone & similar)
Natural stone aggregate mixed with a clear resin and troweled about ½″ thick over prepared concrete. Cures in hours into a seamless, textured “stone carpet.”
- One continuous surface — no joints, no pattern
- Very thin build-up; good where height is tight
- Conforms easily to curves and odd shapes
- Bonded to the slab — performance depends on the slab staying put
Side by Side
Straight comparison based on manufacturer specs, industry lifespan data, and 30+ years of installing over Middle Tennessee concrete.
| Paver Overlay | Resin-Bound Overlay | |
|---|---|---|
| Installed price (Nashville) | From $10 / sq ft with mechanical installation | Typically $14–$25 / sq ft (U.S. installer pricing) |
| Expected lifespan | 25–40+ years; manufacturer lifetime structural warranty on the pavers | Installers typically cite 15–25 years for the surface |
| When the slab underneath cracks or shifts | Pavers flex independently and hide movement; a settled area is lifted, re-bedded, and reset | Bonded coating can telegraph the crack or de-bond along it; repair is a visible patch |
| Repairs | Lift the affected pavers, fix the base, put the same pavers back — invisible | Cut out and re-trowel; new resin rarely matches weathered resin exactly |
| Color & UV | Through-body pigment, colorfast in full Tennessee sun | Depends on resin grade; standard resins can amber over time, UV-stable resins cost more |
| Design options | Herringbone, running bond, borders, inlays, multi-color blends — true masonry look | Aggregate color choice; single seamless texture |
| Height added | ~2½″ (we build transitions and step edges) | ~½″ — the better option if you truly can’t add height |
| Curves & irregular shapes | Cut pavers handle curves well; adds labor on very tight radii | Trowels into any shape with no cutting |
| Drainage | Water sheds off the surface and through edge details as designed | Marketed as permeable, but water still stops at the solid concrete underneath |
| Resale perception | Buyers and appraisers recognize a paver driveway or patio as a permanent upgrade | Newer product in the U.S.; fewer buyers know what they’re looking at |
| Track record in the U.S. | Decades of installs, established manufacturers and standards (ICPI/CMHA) | Growing but recent; warranty rests largely with the local installer |
The Part That Surprises People: Pavers Cost Less
Resin is marketed as the budget-friendly fix. In Nashville, it usually isn’t. Because we install mechanically instead of by hand, our overlay labor is faster and our pricing starts lower than most resin quotes.
Both options require a structurally sound slab. If your concrete is heaving or badly settled, we’ll tell you — and quote the right fix instead of covering a problem.
When Resin Is the Honest Answer
We’d rather lose a job than sell you the wrong surface. A resin-bound overlay can make sense when you genuinely cannot add height — for example a slab that already meets a door threshold with zero room — or on a free-form path with tight curves where a seamless look matters more than longevity. If that’s your situation, we’ll say so during the estimate.
For the typical Nashville driveway, patio, pool deck, or walkway, a paver overlay costs less up front, lasts longer, repairs invisibly, and looks like the permanent upgrade it is.
Why Mechanical Installation Matters
Most paver crews lay every unit by hand. We install with a track-mounted paver lift and an excavator-mounted clamp that places a full layer of pavers at once. That means tighter, more uniform joints, no dropped or chipped units, and a driveway finished in days instead of weeks. It’s also why we can start at $10 per square foot while hand-lay competitors and resin installers can’t.
Common Questions
Can pavers really go over my existing concrete?
Yes, if the slab is structurally sound. We inspect for heaving, active settling, and drainage before quoting. Cosmetic cracks, stains, and surface spalling are exactly what an overlay is for.
How long does a paver overlay take?
Most residential driveways are complete in 2–4 days with mechanical installation, and you can drive on it as soon as we finish.
What about my garage door and front steps?
Adding 2½″ is the most common concern. We build tapered transitions at garage aprons and rework step edges so everything meets code and looks intentional.
Is a paver overlay permeable?
Not over solid concrete — and neither is resin, whatever the marketing says. If stormwater is your goal, ask us about a true permeable paver system.
Do you offer financing?
Yes. See our financing options or ask during your estimate.
